Lagom (posted 20th January 2017)
It was back in September 2015 that we blogged about Hygge so we like to think that we’re pretty good at predicting trends! Therefore it is with delight that we’ll be discovering a new one today! Lagom, pronounced “là gom”. This is a Swedish word which translates to “just the right amount” and it’s the trend that’s going to be overtaking the incredibly vogue-at-the-moment Hygge (pronounced “Huw-gge” or as one of my colleagues once said after she’d read it in an article: “Hou-gar, as in Cougar”).
So what is Lagom and how can we bring it into our homes? How can we embrace it? Well it’s a sustainable and enjoyably refreshing lifestyle that encompasses design and encourages self-discipline and moderation without being overly disciplinarian. It enables us to continue our love affair with Scandi living, inspiring a less cluttered home, office etc. Why have several blankets when you only need one? You may love candles, but do you need 20? An article in Ideal Home gives some great tips on how to bring Lagom into your life:
- Celebrate the beauty of craftsmanship and natural materials by keeping spaces minimal and understated.
- Go green (so on trend!) and fill your windows with boxes of herbs or grow your own plants.
- Scale back your clutter and overhaul chaotic areas.
When looking up Lagom on Instagram (with 19 309 posts (at the time of posting)) aside from the few slightly raunchy images and a well branded product, there are a range of lifestyle shots. Pinterest isn’t as definitive (keep up Pinterest!) You can follow Lagom (magazine) on Facebook. And there are plenty of items to purchase on the internet.
To sum up Lagom, if you find yourself drawn to trends, like Hygge, but want a more up-to-date, less cluttered look, or, just want a less chaotic space in which to be, then Lagom is for you. And it’s fairly easy to achieve. Rationalise and create a comfy, inviting space, ask yourself, how will this enhance my life? With not too little, not too much, just the right amount: Lagom.
Have a great weekend,
