INDEPENDENT RETAILERS MONTH 2022

July has been the month to SUPPORT THE INDIE shopS….

And as we love finding one-off items and trawling through shops for the best buys, we asked our team to recommend some of their favourite independent retailers. Here’s our pick of the crop…

“There's the cutest little bookshop near me called the Kirkdale Bookshop that I've been going to since I was a child. They're constantly holding events and festivals, the latest being one that celebrates LGBTQIA+ authors. When we were looking at flats, we looked at one above this bookshop but it was snapped up so quickly! Imagine living that lifestyle!”
Alysha Davies, Interior Designer

“We have a wonderful grocery shop at the end of our road called The Wine Cellar which is a little deceptive as they sell pretty much anything you need not just wine, although there’s plenty of that too. We call it ‘the best shop in the world’ in our house and it was an absolute treasure during the pandemic.”
Helen Fewster, Owner and Director

House of Hackney is a quintisentially British lifestyle and interiors brand that offers unique, quirky, memorable designs on fabrics, wallpapers, cushions, lampshades and everything in between. With a shop in Shoreditch prepare to enter an Aladdin’s cave!”
Rebecca Hunt, Owner and Director

“There are so many great small businesses in Whitstable but my husband recently bought me some beautiful prints from an independent gallery Fishslab who do some lovely bits.”
Ellen Leedham, Lead Designer for Show Homes

“I love Soapsmith, they are London based but mainly online, they do divine soaps and toiletries.”
Anna von Werthern-Gray, Senior Interior Designer

“Another amazing interiors store, Abigail Ahern’s shop in Essex Road, Islington is a treasure trove of amazing finds and internationally sourced products. Launched in 2003 it has been voted one of the coolest places to shop in the UK.”
Rebecca Hunt, Owner and Director

“I also love Margo McDaid, maybe know better as Margo In Margate. I have her prints in my house too! I discovered her work in the shop at the Turner Contemporary but she has an online shop selling original art, prints and vintage plates and a shop in Ramsgate as well.”
Ellen Leedham, Lead Designer for Show Homes

Calladoodles is one of those local shops that you pop into if you have forgotten someone’s birthday and need a last minute card or gift. You then get waylaid by all the other lovely stuff they have in there! Located on Carshalton High Street they are a massive supporter of local artists and crafts people.”
Rebecca Hunt, Owner and Director

“If you’re looking for neon then look no further. A veritable feast of incredible neon art, God’s Own Junkyard has everything and more when it comes to neon!”
Helen Fewster, Owner and Director

“Oh, and while I am on the subject of Crouch End, another great local shop in Crouch End is Sourdough Sophia, who's mantra is "Sourdough is for life, not just for lockdown" - they do the most incredible bread & also offer in person & online baking courses.”
Anna von Werthern-Gray, Senior Interior Designer

“We also have Indish in Crouch End, filled with lots of Scandi treasures.”
Anna von Werthern-Gray, Senior Interior Designer

“And last but very much not least, we have our founder and all-round incredible creative, Suna Lock’s store in Santa Cruz. Suna moved to the US in the noughties, and opened Stripe, which hands-down is one of my favourite ever independent stores. Always something new, always something beautiful, it’s like getting a sneak peek into Suna’s creative brain.”
Rebecca Hunt, Owner and Director
